Any petrol head learns that the true beauty of an Alfa is in the intangibles–things besides dependability, build quality, handling, and performance. In terms of performance the 8C is an exception. Making use of a Maserati-sourced V8, the 8C rockets to 60 in 4.2 seconds, and even pulls 1.02G around the skid pad. But the driving dynamics are all off. The steering is numb, there is tremendous oversteer, and the paddle-shifter gear box is quite possible one of the worst ever constructed (to cite Autocar.co.uk). But, as Oscar Wilde said, “All art is quite useless,” and it is for this very reason that the 8C ascends to the status of moving art–more so than even Ferrari–as it is undoubtedly one of the beautiful cars ever constructed.

Here are the specs for the ALFA ROMEO 8C COMPETIZIONE.

The M12 was a great car in its own right, but it was still just another thinly disguised race car in street trim. And Lee Noble knew it. So when he created the M15, it was with the intention of creating a genuine competitor to Italian and German exotics twice its price by including luxury amenities such as Sat Nav and providing ample storage space for all those groceries every moderately wealthy gear head needs–and needs fast. But despite all the fluff, the M15 is still one of the purest driving cars ever built, powered by a 455bhp 3.0L twin turbo that’s tuned for acceleration–not top speed–to the “tune” of some 3.5 seconds to 60 mph.

Top 50 Best Sports Cars of All Time

Top 50 Best Of The Sports Cars In The World of All Time
Top 50 Best Sports Cars of All Timemclaren-f1-family

It’s been said before, but for posterity’s sake, let’s say it one more time: We may very well be watching the shades of darkness closing in on the real Golden Age of automobiles.

In times past, a list such as this would feature almost exclusively cars that are long past classic car status, with a few proven new comers thrown in just to keep things interesting. Because an all time list is more than just a list of the podium finishers in the power, acceleration, and lap time segments. There’s the much more difficult challenge of choosing cars deserving for their significance within their historical context as well as our own. Of recognizing cars that broke the mold in their day and yet have retained their charisma through the ages. Of finding cars that have made a real impact on the layman drivers of the world, set a course for a new design language, introduced a new technology, or revised our concept of what is beautiful.

The fact is, though, is that we have lived among the future titans, and never before have so many relatively new cars been so deserving of a place among the all time greats. Obviously, the task of comparing nostalgia to newness is impossibly subjective. So, here are a few caveats to assuage the would-be naysayers out there about our damn good list:

1. This is a list of the best Sports Cars of all time. Not performance cars. Not the most beautiful cars. Not the best selling or most popular cars. Sports Cars.

2. A Mustang, an M5, and mini are not technically defined as Sports Cars. A Sports Car is a performance focused vehicle with two doors and usually two seats, although 2+2 configurations are acceptable beneath the subcategory of luxury-minded vehicles called GT (Gran Touring) cars. Believe me, we wanted desperately to have a Mustang whoop up classic Ferraris on our list, but it just wasn’t feasible, or fair. And if muscle cars can’t do it, neither can your hot hatches and performance saloons.

3. There are many highly deserving cars of such a distinguished pedigree that we could arguably include two or three (or four) specific iterations of the same make and model. But in the interest of including the widest range of cars, and not shamelessly plugging one specific fan-club, we’ve not ranked individual production years. Nor have we included highly successful successors to (all) of our picks, much for the same reason. If we did, let’s just say, every Ferrari between the 250 and the 599 would be on our list.

Finally, each car has two additional links, chocked full of all those numbers you all want, like engine size, horsepower, available performance figures, and enough high-res photos to wet your palates, and your dreams.

And so, without further adieu, we give you, the 50 best sports cars of all time!

New Sport Skoda Joyster Concept

Skoda Joyster

Skoda unveiled the Joyster Concept at the Paris Motor Show back in 2010. This concept was a three-door front-wheel-drive compact vehicle that Skoda decided to aim directly at a younger demographic. Its dynamic shape was definitely eye-pleasing, but nothing ever became of it after its world premiere. That is until now. We can officially confirm that the concept will go into production soon and will become the cheapest model in Skoda’s line-up. The future Joyster will be based on the Volkswagen Up and will be revealed in the first half of 2012. With a price of around 9,000 euro (around $11,500 at the current exchange rates), the Joyster will target models like the Toyota iQ and the Peugeot 107.

The 2012 Joyster will be a front engine, front wheel model that will most likely feature a choice of two engine versions: a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol and a 1.2 three-cylinder diesel, both of them having a CO2 emission of less than 100g/km. However, unlike the future Volkswagen Up (production version known as Lupo), the next Joyster will not get an electric version.

New Sport Subaru FT-86 Rendered

Subaru FT-86 Rendered

Everyone has played enough with the idea of the Toyota FT-86. We have all seen renderings of the future sportscar and have even been privy to a few rumors circulating, but were eventually squashed by Dr. Shigeyuki Hori, Project General Manager for the Sports Vehicle Management division and Kazuo Okino, Group manager for the same division. They state that the Toyota FT-86 will be ready by November 2011, and not the 2013 date that was rumored, and that it will be very close to the Toyota/Subaru concept version that debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show this year. Well, the fans have had it and now we are moving on to Subaru’s version of the FT-86 sports car which has managed to stay under the radar until now.

The two versions of the FT-86 will use similar technology since the concept was a collaboration between the two companies, but Subaru’s version, compared to the Toyota version, will be sportier and will develop much higher performance. The Subaru model will be powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat four engine that will develop around 200 HP, however the STI version will use a turbocharged powerplant with around 260 HP. Both versions will use a six-speed manual gearbox. The two versions will be distinguished by bumpers, front grilles, and wheels.

New Sport Porsche 918 Spyder

Porsche 918 Spyder

It has already been confirmed that Porsche will be bringing the production version of the 918 Spyder to all of the eager Porsche hybrid fans in 2014. Everyone is expecting the production version to have the same power as found in the concept version unveiled this year at the Geneva Motor Show and recently to potential clients at the Pebble Beach Concours. What those people don’t know is that the production 918 Spyder might get a little more oomph before its production debut.

The concept 918 Spyder is powered by a V8 engine delivering more than 500 hp and three electric motors with an overall output of 218hp. The rumors circulating about the production model say that the power and displacement of the petrol engine will be increased. In addition to the increase in power, insiders at the Pebble Beach event also suggest that the 918 is being developed wearing Boxster and Cayman bodies and will be offered in both hard-top and soft-top forms. The changes don’t end there, however. The concept’s 22-inch alloys will be dropped and side mirrors will replace the concept’s camera. The side exhausts will also be moved around to the rear.

Getting excited yet? Well, we only have about three and a half years to wait for it, but not all interested parties will be able to get one. Porsche will be limiting the production to a total of 1200 units, each carrying a price tag of £400,000 (around $625K at the current exchange rat

New Sport In Depth Look At The Zenvo ST1

Zenvo ST1

Who would have imagined that such a car would come from such a non-car place. Denmark might be a fantastic country to live in, with its low crime rates and very uncorrupt government, but nobody could have dreamed of them making a supercar, let alone a machine with 1104 horsepower.

That power number puts the new Zenvo ST1 in the same ranks as the Bugatti Veyron and the Koenigsegg CCXR. Amazingly, many have still not heard of this brilliant machine. The concept has been around for a decade and it finally got the green light for production in 2005. In those five years, not many news stories have been published around the ST1. Somebody needs to hire a new marketing team.

Creating that massive amount of power is a 7.0-liter supercharged V8 that will put out 103 more horsepower than the Veyron and 1,050 pound-feet of torque. The top speed is limited to 233 miles per hour and it’ll hit 60mph in just three seconds. Only fifteen ST1 examples will be made for the wealthy people that can afford them.

New Sport Jaguar confirms three new models

Jaguar confirms three new models

Tata Motors has confirmed that there will be three new models developed for Jaguar: a small sports car, an entry-level sedan, and a station wagon. They will be the first new vehicles to be fully developed under Tata since they purchased Jaguar from Ford a few years ago. The only problem is Tata won’t be getting these three ready for several years. Their plans are to focus on the XJ for now, and reveal the three new models plus restylings of a couple of current models between now and 2014.

The first new model to be released under Tata is a new generation X-Type. This will be a small sedan priced under $40k that will compete with models like the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The platform and architecture will be shared with the next-generation XK coupe and convertible and a new small 2+2 sports car. It could go on sale in 2014.

After that we will see the long rumored small sports car. This model is supposed to be called the XE, and it will be taking on models like the Porsche Boxster.

Following the XE will be the XF, which will be redesigned in 2014. Not only will this car be offered in a standard sedan, but Jaguar will also be offering a long-wheelbase version for China and a station wagon for Europe. A coupe is possible in 2013 and is likely to be sold in the United States. The XK will also be restyled in 2013.

New Sport Toyota FT-86

Toyota FT-86

The Toyota/Subaru collaboration has all of us car enthusiasts talking, but with the Subaru FT-86 getting ready to blow Toyota’s version out of the water, the Japanese company is already thinking of a backup plan. According to some insiders at Toyota, a sedan version of the FT-86 has been given the green light and is considered a "plan B that will be introduced to cover the FT-86 investment in case the coupe doesn’t become a commercial success." The new sedan will cost somewhere in the area of $30K.

The sedan version will be built on the same Subaru Liberty platform that the coupe version is built on with the same Subaru 204 HP boxer engine under the hood. This engine will be mated to a six speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). There are also rumors of a top version model that will use the Subaru 3.6-liter H6 powerplant delivering 256 HP.

So, if built, the sedan version will be the third model in the FT-86 sedan, next to the coupe and the "baby" version.

New Sport Next Ferrari Enzo will be hybrid

Ferrari Enzo

When it comes to the successor for the Ferrari Enzo we’ve heard all kinds of rumors. However, we can now clear some of those up as Ferrari S.p.A. Chairman, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, himself not only talks about the future car, but also about the company’s future.

The next Enzo will be revealed in 2012 and it "will incorporate the state of the art of our knowledge in terms of increasing performances while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. It will then influence all Ferraris that appear after it." Under the hood there will be the same gasoline-hybrid technology that is found in the Vettura Laboratorio HY-KERS concept that was unveiled in March at the Geneva Auto Show. As for the car’s design language, it was previewed in 2007 by the Millechili concept.

Luca Cordero di Montezemolo also confirmed that Ferrari will be about "fast cars and fast trains – and no politics", and that despite his 63 years of experience in life, he will continue working for Ferrari: "I want to shape the next product cycle at Ferrari to assure a bright future at a company that has been inextricably intertwined with my life."

New Sport The MINI New Sport Mini Core: Visual interpretation of the next-generation

Mini Core Visual interpretation of the next-generation

If we only had an ounce of artistic talent in our bodies, then we’d probably spend more time making our own concept renderings than sitting here in awe at the works of some of these young, hotshot designers.

But alas, we have neither the skills nor the imagination for this type of work so we’ll just settle for what we do best: talking about them.

This is the work of one Neal Steinhoff from Munich University of Applied Sciences. Obviously, just by the look of his design, you should know that it’s a MINI. Steinhoff is calling it the “MINI Core”, which is his interpretation of what the next-generation MINI could look like. In one word: nice work. Okay, that was two words, but you get the point.

Relying on an objective to make a concept that adheres to functionality, individualization, and concept novelty, Steinhoff’s MINI Core draws a lot of its design from the current MINI R56. The young designer does put a couple of new wrinkles on his concept, including the round fog lamps, the addition of a rear bumper diffuser, the arranged slot air intakes, and a more aggressive overall outline that makes the MINI Core a concept rendering that we wouldn’t mind seeing out on the road in the future.

New Sport Citroen DS line-up will include a sports car

Citroen DS line-up will include a sports car

Next to the DS3 and DS4, the newly launched Citroen DS line-up will include a series of new models, including a sports car said the company boss Frederic Banzet at the Paris Auto Show. Talking to AutoCar he said that a sports car is seriously taken under consideration. But until we’ll have the chance to see it on the streets we will see more derivatives of the DS3. And the first of them will be a soft-top DS3.

Citroen’s DS models are distinguished by: striking LED light, a chrome-finished waistline surrounding dark tinted windows, muscular wheel arches, tautly drawn roofline with a spoiler for added vitality, chrome rear bumper and light clusters highlights. The DS3 model gets a 1.6 turbo THP engine that delivers a total of 155 HP, while the DS4 will get a HDi 110 engine combined with Citroen’s micro-hybrid e-HDi technology. The two models will go on sale in 2011.

New Sport Lexus works on IS Coupe

Lexus works on IS Coupe

The current Lexus IS line-up includes a sedan and a convertible model. But the future will look a little bit different. Lexus will unveil s new generation IS in 2012, but next to the usual models, the Japanese company will also offer a coupe version. This will compete with models like Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and the BMW 3-Series Coupe. The coupe version will arrive a year after the new generation will make its official debut. An F version will be also offered.

So, if we’ll get a coupe version, most likely the F version will feature the same 5.0 liter V8 engine as the IS-F sedan. This means a total of 402 HP at 7000rpm and 500Nm of torque at 5200rpm. That sounds more like a sports car, right? Top speed will most likely go up to 170 mph.

New Sport Honda Civic (eighth generation)

Honda Civic (eighth generation)

The eighth generation of the Honda Civic was introduced in 2006. Trademarks of this generation include its futuristic sleek body, and its "two-tier" instrument panel. In many countries (USA, UK, New Zealand), all models (including the base model) come standard with power windows, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and side/curtain airbags (for a total of six airbags). Additionally, the 2006 models acquired ULEV-2 (Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) certification and boast a more powerful 1.8 litre engine than the 2005 counterparts while retaining almost equal fuel economy.

In the North American market, the sedan and coupe styles are available, which were designed in Japan and Ohio, respectively. The sedan and coupe are available in several trim levels (DX, DX-G, LX, EX, EX-L, and Si). The Hybrid only comes as a sedan, while the Si coupe was joined by a sedan in 2007, and the Si sedan entered the Canadian lineup in 2008. 2008 saw the addition of new interior features such as a 60/40 rear folding seat and remote trunk release for LX models (previously only available on EX models), while 2009 models had a mid-generation refresh most notable on the front grille.[3] In Canada, the Japanese-market type Civic 2.0GL is sold as the Acura CSX, and uses a 155 hp K20Z2. A CSX Type-S is also sold, which is similar, but instead is equipped with the Civic Si drivetrain (197 hp K20Z3 and 6 speed transmission).

New Sport Corvette ZR1

Corvette ZR1 Sport

Corvette ZR1 Sport

After years of speculation, spy photos, and rumors, General Motors revealed its Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 as a 2010 model. As expected, the ZR1 is the most powerful and most expensive Corvette model ever. In fact, the ZR1 is expected to be the first production Corvette to hit a top speed of 200mph.

The time has arrived, no more gossip, unidentified sightings or gibberish. General Motors is releasing its 2009 model of the Chevrolet Corvette, called the ZR1. As anticipated, the ZR1 Corvette comes out the gate as the most powerful Chevy Corvette model ever built. It is also the most expensive but a fraction of what a competing Porsche costs.

The all-new LS9 engine is based on a modified LS3 6.2-liter block and is expected to deliver 100 horsepower per liter. One can expect the motor to produce 620 horsepower with approximately 600 pound-feet.

Some performance test numbers have not been disclosed by GM due to some ongoing tweaking. However, it's safe to say the ZR1 should go from zero to 60mph close to the 3.0 second mark since the Z06 does it in 3.6 seconds. Moreover, the Z06 only has 505 horsepower compared to 620 for the new ZR1.

The ZR1, according to Chevy engineers, sports a power to weight ratio that is nothing short of outstanding. It is said to have a better power to weight ratio than the Porsche GT2, the Ferrari 599 and the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. In summary, the new Corvette is said to weigh nearly 200 pounds more than a Z06 and to push some of the weight to the front just a tad to yield a 52/48 front/rear ratio.

GM engineers utilized the Z06 chassis as a base, but tweaked the front and rear independent suspension to work with the ZR1's ultra-wide tires for increased road traction. According to GM, the car achieves 1g cornering grip.

The ZR1 features GM's Magnetic Selective Ride Control (MSRC) suspension system which is an adjustable suspension system. The system adjusts every millisecond and offers sharp handling during aggressive driving, and a comfortable luxurious ride when cruising on open roads or along the countryside. Corvette chief engineer's claim due to the MSRC damping control, the ZR1 has a less adventurous ride over bumps than its predecessor, the Z06.

Other tweaks in the chassis area include Brembo calipers which hug large carbon-ceramic rotors which are typically made for Ferrari's Enzo and FXX. The CCM is needed due to the ZR1 having the largest wheel width and diameter of any Corvette produced. The rims measure 19 inches up front and 20 inches in rear diameter. The width of the rear is a colossal 12 inches, while the front wheels are close behind at 10 inches of width.

It all sounds good, so when can you drive it. You'll have to wait a bit until first spin, which is a few months off. Maybe the numbers above can convince you to wait for the fastest, high-tech, and perhaps the most unique Corvette ever made.
